ABSTRACT
Several factors collaborated for the occurrence of malaria in Mato Grosso, the main
ones being the intense migration flow between bordering states considered endemic
to malaria and the environmental disequilibrium provoked by deforesting, mining
activities and land cleared by burniing. The way the people carry out the treatment
of malaria, has to do with the mortality rates and the reduction of the transmission of
the disease. However, some factors can influence the way the people take care of
their health, especially when they are infected bt the plasmodium causar of malaria.
Among these factors we can mention the adverse reactions of the medicine, the
bionomical, geographical, economical, social and cultural conditions, as well as
beliefs and merits of the people of the county researched. With that aim, the
research had as its general purpose in anyalizing the influence of the popular
practices of care carried out by those contaminated by malaria in the county of
Juruena-MT and specific, make a discription of the medical attendance system for
malaria infected people in the county; identify the knowledge the people have
concerning malaria and the forms of care necessary; understand the cultural
aspects involved in the way the people handle malaria. The people researched were
SUS (Central Health System) users with diagnosis of malaria and living in the
county of Juruena-MT. The data was arranged, grouped and analised based on the
method of analysis of content supported by the theme analysis technique, based on
cultural concepts, care and the Leininger Cultural Care Theory. During the analysis
of the data, two groups emerged: group 1 – The health service and anti-malaria
therapy and group 2 - Popular pratices that influence the malaria care process. The
first group produced two subgroups: the health service and the organization of the
treatment and diagnosis space and the anti-malaria therapy and their side effects.
The same thing occured with group rwo, which were: knowledge of the people in
regards to the transmission and treatment of malaria; ways of handling and treating
mnalaria..We came to the conclusion that in a general way, all the popular practices
to handle malaria, by those researched, are influenced by the individual and
colective culture present in the community, being its the way they discovered to take
care of their health as well as to help out in the cure of the disease. Thus, there is a
need for the health agents to get to know and value the significance of these care
practices, have a closer contact with local realities in order to propose care actions,
seeking to Narrow popular knowledge with scientific knowledge so as to sponsor
political health programs in tune with local realities.
